An enthusiasts magazine by pipers for pipers in North America
Spring 2011 Edition
The Haida is an Islander 36 berthed in Alameda, CA. It is a 36 foot sailing sloop named after the Haida Indians from North British Columbia in the Pacific Northwest. The Haida were known as the bravest seafarers among the Northwest Indians along with some of the fiercest warriors garnering the nickname "The Vikings of the North Pacific." They would travel for hundreds of miles on whale hunts, fishing expeditions or raids up and down the Pacific coast. As I am from the Northwest, grew up reading about the Haida and have always dreamed of sailing from Washington along the inland passage to Alaska tracing in the footsteps of the famous explorer Captain George Vancouver, it seemed the only fitting name to apply.
Throughout the vessel is beautiful stained teak wood which you do not see on modern production sailboats. Historic brass oil lamps and trawler lamps glow in offset of the more modern brass electrical bulkhead lamps. Along the cabin sides of Haida you will find various artwork showing the events in the explorations of Captain James Cook across the Pacific Islands and the later voyage of Captain George Vancouver along the Pacific Northwest coast. There is a friendly Tiki atmosphere with various native artwork for the Pacific Islands along with full Tiki bar in preparation for Haida's future journey to Alaska and final future journey to Hawaii and beyond in exploration of the South Pacific. There is always a spare Hawaii Islander shirt, Tiki mug and Island music playing throughout the cabin for visiting passangers to take you away to palm trees and warm sandy beaches.

The Haida is a restored 1972 Islander 36 sailing sloop. She is 36 feet long, has 2 double beds, a quarter berth bed, a queen bed and two bunk beds. In addition she has a full head (washroom), shower, galley (kitchen). She is currently being prepared for a sail to Mexico next year, with an ultimate destination of Alaska in the next 5 years. After the Alaska trip, should time and money permit, Haida is being outfitted for a circumnavigation of the globe. Above is the artwork on the stern of a Haida killer whale. This symbol was chosen, as out of the water Haida looks like a killer whale with its black hull and deep 6 foot keel.
